First 2017 2018 TWIYC Training Session at PEP Den Haag on October 11 2017
It was busy on Wednesday, October 11 2019 from 7:30 PM-10:00 PM!
I introduced The World in Your Classroom myself in person after exchanging several emails with all TWIYC applicants (150 applications this year already). Many nationalities and languages were represented that evening among the twenty-six The World in Your Classroom volunteers came to PEP Den Haag to receive a didactic training from our new trainer Lia Bekking-Slootjes.
Lia works as an educational advisor at HCO/ Bazalt. Her role is to train and coach teachers and school management staff individually or in teams. Part of her work takes place in international schools in The Hague. I graduated in Special Educational Needs as a Master of Arts in England. Before she obtained an M.A. she was a teacher and support coordinator in primary schools as well as in secondary schools for SEN students. She has specialized in learning potential and in behaviour issues.
Lia taught us about classroom management and cooperative learning techniques to make lessons more interactive and less boring to Dutch high school students. She explained the Dutch high school system. This a is a link to the video that we watched if you need a refresher or are curious about it. https://dutchreview.com/expat/learn-dutch/the-dutch-school-system-a-guide-for-parents-on-dutch-education
Our training does not only preach interaction, participants get to practice what they would ask from pupils in a classroom. Everyone got to network during the many practical assignments they were given.
It is a very intense training. People move around, write down concepts, answer questions, brainstorm together.
You get to choose who you share a table with but also get to work with more people.
Here is a nice memory of all who participated that evening.
Thank you to Wai-Kin Chung and Rob Reterink from PEP Den Haag for their help securing and setting up this beautiful space and catering.
I look forward to the next training session with our next group on the evening of October 30, 2017!
